Clinical Compounding Pharmacist

Overview:
The selected candidate will 1) lead the establishment of pharmacy compounding service at the Pharmacy Department, 2) operate the compounding service, 3) oversee the quality aspects of compounding service, and 4) train clinical pharmacists and other staff in compounding services.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design the scope of services and produce operating procedures for compounding services at NNUH in line with evidence-based practice as well as applicable laws and regulations.
- Develop service policies and procedures.
- Develop, execute and maintain robust quality assurance, quality control and quality monitoring program for compounding services.
- Develop, execute and maintain a robust protocol for recall of compounded products.
- Establish and maintain stocks of equipment, supplies and medications for proper execution of compounding services.
- Participate in annual budget preparation for compounding services.
- Oversee compounding services throughout the hospital.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in the area of medication compounding and admixtures.
- Operate compounding services using proper compounding techniques with strong emphasis on maintaining quality standards and sterile field requirements.
- Prepare compounded therapies in accordance with accepted pharmacy standards and established procedures within compounding services.
- Apply pharmaceutical standards in relation to order verification, medication reconciliation, review of allergies, and other quality assurance checks during the process of compounding medications.
- Consult with physicians, other pharmacists, clinical staff and patients on as needed basis during the fulfilment of compounding orders.
- Recommend changes to orders to prescribing physicians on as needed basis.
- Review and act on reported events related to compounding services.
- Develop and update on regular basis training material for pharmacy and other clinical staff. This includes, but is not limited to: developing training manuals, videos, competency checklists and testing material.
- Conduct compounding training to selected staff in collaboration with the training functions at the hospital.
- Function in the role a clinical pharmacist as part of the Pharmacy Department.
- Participate in Pharmacy Department functions and engagements.
- Play an active role in hospital’s quality management and quality improvement activities.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of compounding services practice and applicable rules and regulations.
- Adhere to hospital policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Pharmacy Management and hospital leadership.
Education, Experience and Skills:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy; post graduate education is preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of hospital pharmacy experience.
- Minimum of one (1) year hands on pharmaceutical compounding in a hospital or compounding facility;
- Documented Training in pharmaceutical compounding and/or certification in the field of compounding;
- Experience in compounding different pharmaceutics including but not limited to: oncologic agents, TPN, Intrathecal compounds, concentrated medications... etc.;
- Knowledge and working experience of JCI and Pharmacy Trade Organizations’ standards and protocols preferred;
- Flexibility in work schedule including working 24-hour rotation as well as weekends.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for interacting with patients and other healthcare professionals;
- Ability to interpret and apply evidence-based research and scientific knowledge to solve problems and make decisions;
- Ability to follow directions and instructions in a team environment but also have the ability to work autonomously and manage own workload when required;
- Teamwork skills to be able to work in multidisciplinary teams; and
- Ability to train others.
Shortlisted candidates may be required to complete a written pharmacy exam and/or demonstrate competency in compounding services through a supervised hands-on competency check.
